Substance Abuse Treatment
For 14 years, Fortune has been licensed by New York State’s Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) to provide outpatient substance abuse treatment. Our program follows the best practices cited by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), as outlined in their Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) #30: Continuity of Prisoner Treatment for Substance Use Disorders from Institution to Community, in which Fortune is featured as a model program.
Cultural competency remains the core of our service provision philosophy, an asset that is perhaps most significant to our Substance Abuse Treatment program. Because nearly all of our counselors and many of our staff members are former prisoners and/or in recovery, clients have a unique opportunity to interact with and learn from positive role models. Treatment consists of the following four components and lasts between six and twelve months, depending on each individual client’s needs:
- Assessment and Orientation, where clients undergo standardized psychosocial screening, educational and vocational aptitude testing and a series of baseline drug tests.
- Intensive Treatment involves individual and group counseling, career development, education classes and other services as needed. Students move onto the next stage after 30 days of sobriety.
- Relapse Prevention focuses on helping clients maintain their sobriety and develop an aftercare plan. Clients graduate from this phase after 60 days of sobriety, provided that they have remained drug-free for 90 consecutive days.
- Aftercare is strongly encouraged for all program graduates. We expect and encourage clients to return to Fortune for counseling, relapse prevention groups, education classes or any of the other re-entry services we provide.
In 2005, Fortune provided substance abuse treatment to 273 individuals.
