"FORTUNE AT FORTY"
Fortune News, Summer 2007

On February 23, 1967 Fortune and Men’s Eyes opened at the Actors’ Playhouse in New York City. The play, which described with brutal reality of everyday life in a correctional facility, angered and electrified audiences. Many people simply could not believe that prisons could breed the degree of cruelty and inhumanity portrayed by the actors.

At the end of one fateful performance, someone in the audience stood up and openly questioned the play's accuracy. In response, a former prisoner also stood up and held the audience spellbound for 40 minutes with his tale of life in the "joint." He talked about how prison life degrades individuals and disgraces a culture that normally prides itself on its decency. People in the audience were shocked and intrigued. Later that year some former prisoners got together with the play’s producer, David Rothenberg, to form The Fortune Society.

As Fortune approaches its 40th birthday, we want to look back on the history of the organization and reflect on the ways in which the criminal justice system has changed over the last four decades. For this special issue, we’re looking for articles that describe your impression of or experience with The Fortune Society – especially if you’ve been reading Fortune News for a long time. Be creative!

AS ALWAYS, SUBMISSIONS ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE TOPIC. FORTUNE NEWS WILL CONSIDER ARTICLES ON ANY SUBJECT ADDRESSING CRIMINAL JUSTICE, PRISON, AND REENTRY ISSUES.

Submission Requirements: Articles must be no more than 1,250 words, typed, double-spaced, and include the title, author's name and short bio of the author (incarcerated writers may submit handwritten manuscripts). Articles may also be submitted as Microsoft Word files via email, to shartig@fortunesociety.org. Photos, illustrations, and artwork are welcome. Manuscripts will not be returned.
